The following Letter to the

The Saugerties Times, 02-29-08 A Buckeye's View of the
BOE During the summer I came to your village of Saugerties to
visit my sister. I stayed for about three weeks and loved
every minute of it! What a beautiful and friendly place. When I came back to Ohio I bragged about your village to
my daughter for quite a while and hinted we should move up
there. We are both Registered Nurses so getting a job would
not be too difficult. Shirley's four kids, 6-12 years old,
would not have very far to go to school, and the taxes there
are less than what we pay here. Finally, my daughter relented so I called my sister with
what I thought would be the good news that we had decided to
move up there near her. Much to my surprise, she said,
"please do not bring my nieces and nephews up here until you
have had a chance to go to a board of education meeting."
She said she attends almost all of them and they are the
best entertainment in town. I had no idea what she was
talking about, so I did come up for another visit. Before
the meeting I heard a rather large man saying to another man
that, "No matter what they want, we vote against it. You
know they are my enemies." I asked Sis who that was and she
said it was Mr. [George] Heidcamp. She said he is on
the board and he and several other members are cops there. I
hope they are less biased in being cops than they are
representing the people, if what I saw at the meeting is any
indication of how they work. During the meeting they talked about a job that would
save the taxpayers thousands of dollars and this was met
with disdain by Mr. Heidcamp and those I could assume where
his minions, as when he spoke, their heads bobbed up and
down, a principal leaving the district for another district
(I wonder why). This was more fun than watching monkeys at
the Toledo Zoo! What a hoot! Mercy, we do not act like that
at public meetings here. Gracious me, I had to bite my
tongue to keep from laughing. Sis told me that this board is
not the same since the three new members came on board. It
seems they their agenda and the district has an agenda and
the teacher's staff and students will suffer. She is worried
about her grandkids schooling there. When I came back home I
called my cousin who was a board member for six years. He
told me that the board is supposed to work with the
administrators for the benefit of the students and
community, not against them. If they can't work together the
community should get a new board. I called Sis with our decision and she said wait till I
send you a copy of what was in the local paper. She sent me
a copy of a column by Mr. [Klaus] Gaebel [of the
Saugerties Post Star, whose article is called "Eagle's
View"]. From the venom in the column, I think the column
should have another part of the eagle's anatomy as the name
of it. I would guess that the Mrs. Peters he makes reference
to go smart and skedaddled. These types of actions are not
what I want my grandchildren exposed to. Maybe Sis and her
family will move back to Ohio near us. Since I do not want my nephews and nieces nor my sister
harassed by the cops or community, I can only sign this with
the name everyone hear calls me. Aunt Bea Vandalia, Ohio
