Resurfaces Two board members, responding to Lanny Walter's
recent criticism, mentioned the infamous Aunt Bea letter,
published by the Saugerties Times without a real name. Aunt
Bea, readers may recall, criticized certain individuals on
the school board and myself for columns I wrote about the
board. Saugerties Times editor Will Dendis admitted in an
editorial that he blew it by publishing the letter without
first checking the validity of the author's identity. It
turned out he could not contact Aunt Bea, although she
furnished him a "real" name, address and phone numbers in
her letter. She wasn't traceable, and apparently the road
she gave in her hometown of Vandalia, Ohio doesn't exit. The
letter had gone to press by the time Dendis realized he'd
been tricked. Will the real Aunt Bea please stand up? That's unlikely,
although she (some believe "she's a "he" in real life) is
believed to have been at board meetings and spoken (of
course, without using the pseudonym.) The terms for school board members Robert McCaig,
Terry Parisian, and Michael Brennan are up. Brennan is known
to definitely not be running. Word on the others is they
aren't running either. We'll know for sure next week if any
throw their hat back into the ring, since petitions are due
in to the school district clerk by Monday. It only takes 66
signatures to get on the ballot, so last minute
change-of-hearts are possible. William Creen Jr., Walter Frey, Tom Ham, Steve Haun, and
Charles "Chuck" Schirmer are said to be circulating
petitions to run for the school board this May. Other names
are rumored. Circulating petitions and handing them in are two
different things. Some would-be candidates drop out at the
last minute by not handing in their petition, after the
competition is known. William Creen ran for the board once before, in 2004.
Walter Frey ran for a town board seat last November. Tom Ham
ran for the school board last year, just missing out on a
seat by 25 votes. He has been at most if not every board
meeting since - a sign he's been serious about this second
run for a year. He's also the first to officially announce.
Steve Haun made a name for himself as a taxpayer advocate
during the town's last revaluation process, and will have
plenty to say during the campaign. He's able and willing to
speak his mind. Charles Schirmer is a prior board member and
has served as an instructional substitute in the school
district.
