Response to Ms. Manhattan

This letter-to-the-editor is in response to a July 6th letter appearing in the local papers from Kathy Casey.

It would only really be appropriate for "Ms. Manhattan" to ask me questions about school budget cuts if and when I am elected to the board and entitled to a vote. In the meantime, I’m not in a position to make any changes or decide what to and what not to cut, so challenging me seems totally "out of line." But, since you seem to show such an avid interest in our community, particularly our school budget, why not come up here from Manhattan during the week to attend school board meetings? You might then ask the board members those questions yourself. And this is, of course, a perfect example of why we must be diligent about whom we elect to serve on the board. This year we made a good start, but it was just the first step.

One last thing, are you aware that the summer reading program was one of the programs cut from last year’s budget when voters rejected the first go ‘round? Why not blame that on me, too? In fact, why not blame me for the recent floods as well?

You mention in your letter that you read my articles, I appreciate that and hope that you will continue–after all, it’s nice to know that people who visit Saugerties on weekends or only sporadically can make time to read our local newspaper, and then also take the time to write a letter to the editor. Of course if you feel pressed to do all that during the weekend, on top of driving back and forth to the City, you can enjoy our web site, www.saugertieswatchdog.com right from home in Manhattan.
